Are cold showers really beneficial? People from ancient times think so, as many used to take cold baths in the belief that they would help prevent disease and reduce pain and be generally beneficial to health. Many today take cold showers or baths, they feel it invigorates them and helps them be bright and alert for the rest of the day.

But what does science say?

Well, a study in 2016 by some Dutch researchers decided to answer this question. Or try to. They put together a study group of some 2800 people and split them into four groups. The first group became the control group and they would shower as they normally would. The next three groups were to cold shower for 30 seconds, 60 seconds and 90 seconds a day for a period of one month.

Not all succeeded in this, with a 20% drop off of the groups over the duration. No doubt the biggest drop off was from the 90 second group.

However, results were obtained and it was found that the majority of people taking cold showers felt they experienced a better way of life. They felt better and this also backed up the next stat that there was a 29% reduction of sick days compared to the control group.

The most interesting stat of all was that there didn’t seem to be any more benefit to showering for 30 seconds or 90 seconds, so for those who do want to take a cold shower, 30 seconds is enough!

While the research clearly showed benefits to taking cold showers, it didn’t answer the question of why. The researchers do have theories including increased action by the immune system and some neurological benefits, but more research is needed.

So if you’ve ever wondered about taking a cold shower to see benefits from it, just take a 30 second cold shower and see how you feel. Perhaps have your regular shower and finish off with 30 seconds of cold at the end to see what happens. Keep at it for a few days and see how you feel. It may also help with back and neck pain by acting as an anti-inflammatory.
