Our chiropractic treatment here in Audubon Park sees the majority of patients with either back or neck pain. However, we do see a lot of people who have problems with headaches and we have managed to help many of them to reduce intensity and frequency of their pain.
It’s incredible to imagine, but in the United States around 157 million days are lost as a result of headaches and migraines. You can only guess at the amount of money that this would equate to in terms of losses. It’s really important to get these under control, not only for people’s own comfort but for our economy and livelihoods too.
Of course, there are many different types of headaches, the ones we can really help are the ones that emanate from the cervical spine area. These account for about 18% of all headache types.
Chiropractic care in the form of spinal manipulative therapy has been researched and seen to be helping patients with this type of headache. A recent study has shown that with a 256 sample size that were split into 4 separate groups each having different amounts of manipulations. The groups were 0 manipulations, 6, 12 and 18 over the course of 6 weeks. The following year they looked at that study group again and found that those who had more therapy sessions had a smaller dose dependent relationship to help with their pain compared to the groups with few sessions.
It’s pretty clear that regular chiropractic manipulations do help and even reduce drug use to control these headaches.
Moreover, it also helps chiropractors like ourselves to be able to determine how many treatments it would need to help get a patients headaches down to an acceptable level. Naturally every case is different, but at least the guidelines are general and can provide an idea while being mindful that small adjustments may be necessary to provide an accurate amount.
