Migraines are a common condition that we treat here at Audubon Park Chiropractic. Many migraines are formed from issues in the cervical area and can be treated through chiropractic manipulations. Despite this, it is still not to well understood how they form although there are many pointers such as genetics, chemical imbalances and allergies etc that do seem to contribute to the condition.

Medication is one of the most popular ways to help and manage them, but of course there are always costs in side effects of such medications and especially so with prolonged use. There are many non pharmaceutical options available and it becomes a matter of what works for any individual.

Nutrition also has links to migraines. For example a large scale study of over 4300 adults who suffer from migraines suggested some common foods that can trigger a migraine. Chocolate was most popular at 75%, aged cheeses were next at 48% followed by citrus fruit at 30%. Red wine in particular affected 25%. Many other foods are also thought to be triggers such as aspartame, junk foods, fatty foods, coffee, tea, caffeinated drinks, nuts and dairy foods.

A 2019 study suggested that migraine sufferers are deficient in magnesium. Magnesium is a core mineral that helps regulate blood pressure, blood sugar and nerve and muscle function. Other studies back this up by showing that sufferers who took magnesium supplements experienced a reduction in frequency and intensity of migraines.
